Best Vacuum For Cat Hair

best vacuum for cat hair

As I mentioned in my post on the best air purifier for cat allergies, I developed an allergy to cats after being overexposed to their allergen in the last several years. I needed a vacuum that was specifically made for sucking up cat dander yet didn’t break the bank.

I absolutely LOVE my vacuum and HIGHLY recommend the Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away available on The best thing about it is that it has a 99.9% HEPA filter, which means it traps air particles as small as 0.3 microns. Cat dander is 2 to 3 microns, so it definitely gets trapped by the vacuum. Secondly, the vacuum comes with an accessory which works excellent to suck up cat hair on furniture.

HEPA Filter 99.9%

True HEPA filter standards for High Efficiency Particulate Air. It is a designation given to vacuums and air purifiers to ensure the quality and standard of trapping small air particles.

The Shark has HEPA filter that traps 99.9% of dust and allergens. This means it will trap all air particles as small as 0.3 microns. Cat dander is 2 to 3 microns so it will definitely get sucked up in a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner.

Heavy “Gas Pedal” Pressure

I think this needs some elaboration. You know how some cars have heavy gas pedal pressure?

For example, when I had a Toyota, the car had a really light gas pedal pressure. Then I sold that and got a VW Golf, which had a very heavy gas pedal pressure. To me, a heavy gas pedal pressure feels so good, because I know I have to put effort into accelerating or braking.

Similarly, the Shark feels very heavy when you push it. It feels as though the vacuum has a high suction intensity to the floor.

Very Portable

With a click of a button, the wand and the cylindrical compartment that holds the waste come apart from the base of the vacuum. This makes vacuuming the couch and hard to reach places a lot easier.

Furniture Accessory to Suck Up Cat Hair and Dander

One of the reasons why I chose this vacuum among its competitors is because during my research, I found that the Shark has an accessory that attaches to the wand for the sofa. It is used to pick up cat hair and dander from the sofa. And the Lift-Away ability makes it so much easier to put it near me on the couch while I’m vacuuming it.

The accessory has a velvet-like material that attracts the cat hair when you rub it on the fabric of the sofa. In one sweep motion, the velvety material attracts and the vacuum sucks. They make a deadly pair to the unwanted particles!

Just imagine all the hair Charlie leaves wherever he sits.

Easy Cleanup

I vacuum once a week and when I do, the empty canister fills up with cat hair. It’s such a satisfying feeling emptying the canister.

It is super easy to clean up. The canister comes apart with the click of a button. Then you just put it over the garbage bag and shake the contents loose. Voila!

Here’s a video of me using one of my Shark Professional vacuums (yes, I have more than one…) and the result after vacuuming 1 week’s worth of Charlie hair on just 600 square feet.
